Cisternino is a small town in Apulia, about 50 kilometres from Brindisi. It dominates the entire Itria Valley, an area renowed for the trulli, the olive trees and the white wines. A beautiful village and an example of spontaneous architecture, your tour of Cisternino will show narrow streets, balconies, stairways remained intact over time. If you like meat, Cisternino is well-known for its butcher’s shops where you can select your meat and watch it being cooked!
It is the most beautiful church of Cisternino, known as the Mother Church. It was erected in the 12th century over the previous 8th century site of worship of the Basilian monks.
The tower was built in the 11th century by the Normans, and is 17 meters tall. It was largely rebuilt in the late 14th century and was remodeled several times over the years. On the top of the tower there is a statue of St. Nicholas.
