Paestum is a must place that you can’t miss when visiting Naples. Located about one hour away, it is the best ancient Greek settlement in Italy, with temples, civic buildings, a Roman forum and amphitheatre. On the opposite side from the archaeological area there is a museum that houses the most important finds of the Greek and Etruscan civilizations. If you are interested in history and archaeology, you should really consider traveling to this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is the oldest temple of Paestum, more known as the Basilica, dedicated to Hera, the goddess of women and marriage. It is an interesting structure carved from limestone, today without the frieze and the roof.
This is the best preserved Greek temple of the world. Initially called Temple of Neptune, being considered a tribute to the god of the sea, it was later found to be another temple, dedicated to Hera, dating back to the mid-5th century.
Also known as the Temple of Ceres, it is the smallest of the three temples in Paestum. It was dedicated to Athena, the goddess of war and crafts. This temple dates back to the 550 BC and it was later used as a Christian church.
Considered one of the most important museums in Italy, it contains numerous findings belonging to the Greek and Roman ages. Here you can see the Tomb of the diver, the only example of funerary painting found in the town and its surroundings.
