Siena is one of the most visited cities in Tuscany, a place extremely rich in churches, monuments, palaces and museums. It has a long history dating back to the Etruscan time, and the historic centre has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. Siena is particularly famous for the Palio, a medieval horse race held twice a year in the main square of Siena, Piazza del Campo. Charles Dickens considered Siena “very dreamy and fantastic, and most interesting.” Get more from your visit in Siena and San Gimignano, a small walled hill town about 50 kilometres from Siena, with our Italian guide!
It is a real art gem of Siena. Built between 1215 and 1263, it contains several artworks by the greatest sculptors of every age, such as Nicola Pisano, Donatello, Michelangelo and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. You can climb to the top and admire a stunning view of the city.
Established as a marketplace in the 12th century, Piazza del Campo is a shell-shaped square, world-famous for its beauty and architecture. The Palazzo Pubblico and its tall Torre del Mangia surround this fulcrum of Siena’s civic life.
This building is an example of medieval architecture with Gothic elements and its front is slightly curved to follow the perimeter of the square. To the left of the Palace stands the Torre del Mangia with its 88-metre height. To arrive at the top you have to climb more than 400 steps.
