The Cathedral it was dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore, the Virgin of the Flower, in 1412, a clear allusion to the lily, the symbol of the city of Florence. Florence Cathedral is worldwide famous for the astonishing Brunelleschi’s dome and its polychrome (white, green, red/pink) marble panels covering the whole structure.
It was built over the second cathedral, which early Christian Florence had dedicated to St. Reparata. The Duomo Florence was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio and after him many other architects contributed to the final version of the building, that was finished in 1436. Inside is full of extraordinary artworks: floors, gently covered by multi-colored marbles, walls, covered by the precious Last Judgement frescoes.
The local tour guide will show you the main sight starting from Piazza del Duomo with its interesting anecdotes. In addition to the cathedral and Brunelleschi’s cutting-edge dome, you can admire the Giotto’s bell tower and visit the Duomo Museum, hosting masterpieces of Michelangelo and Donatello. Inside the Museum you will find the largest concentration of Florentine monumental sculpture in the world.
